Active in Ashfield

There is always a lot to do in Ashfield, whether it’s playing tennis or soccer at the local park, social dancing in the Civic Centre, participating in theatre workshops, or swimming classes at the local pool.

Want to know what's available?

“Active in Ashfield” is a project by Ashfield Council aimed at encouraging local residents to get out and to get active! This doesn’t just mean doing physical exercise – although this is one great way to do it. Getting active can be social and recreation-based too; either through a club, with a group of friends or partner, or by yourself. You can sign up for free tai chi classes, join a sporting club, take a walk through Ashfield Park, enjoy a bus outing or become a member of the local theatre group. We have put together a directory of local sport, recreational and social clubs to help you get involved.

In October 2007, Council published a directory called the “Active in Ashfield Directory: Sport, Recreation and Social Activities in Ashfield”. The directory has been published in English and Chinese. Click below for a copy:

Active in Ashfield Directory (English)
Active in Ashfield Directory (Chinese)

This 20-page directory is your “one-stop” place for locating sporting clubs, fitness and community centres, exercise classes, social groups, sporting services for people with a disability and volunteer opportunities within the Ashfield Municipality. Throughout the directory key services in each area have been highlighted.

Ashfield Access Committee

Do you have an interest in promoting free and safe access for all community members?

The Ashfield Access Committee is recruiting new members to work on a broad range of projects throughout the municipality.

The Committee provides information and advice to Ashfield Council on access issues faced by people with a disability, seniors, and parents or minders using prams and strollers.

Members meet on the second Monday of each month to manage projects including the installation of access ramps, paths and audio signals at traffic lights. They also develop strategies to improve access to local facilities, businesses and new developments in the Ashfield area.

Current projects include:

  • Promotion and events for International Day of People with a Disability 2006
  • Construction of a sensory garden at the Summer Hill Community Centre and garden shed area
  • Discussion with local businesses regarding improved access and safe access to parking, taxis and public transport.
New members are invited to attend this meeting to learn more about the Access Committee and its operations.

For more information, contact Linton Purtell, Community Worker for Ashfield Council on Tel: 9716 1842.
