The Ashfield Council Australia Day Awards promote and recognise
outstanding achievements that advance our national goals and values.
They promote good citizenship, personal achievement and service to thecommunity. The Awards are supported by the Australia Day Council of New South Wales.
Ashfield Council congratulates the following winners of Australia Day Awards in 2008.
Citizen of the Year - Philip Lingard
Philip Lingard has been an Ashfield resident for 38 years. As a research scientist, engineer and barrister (now retired) he has made a substantial contribution in the fields of medicine, mine safety, oceanography, precision engineering and optics. In the Ashfield municipality, Philip has worked to reduce, and if possible, eliminate the impact of aircraft noise and pollution that affect the locality everyday.
Philip is the secretary of the North-West Residents Airport Group and is Ashfield Council’s Mayor’s Delegate for the Sydney Airport Community Forum. Philip also contributed significantly to the Implementation and Monitoring Committee.
Citizen of the Year - Jack Mundey AO

Jack Mundey became a national figure in the 1970s when he led the
Builder’s Labourers Federation’s famous “green bans”. Under Jack’s guidance, they joined with local communities to preserve significant sites such as Sydney’s historic Rocks area, Centennial Park, Victoria Street in Kings Cross and Kelly’s Bush, the last stretch of public bushland in Hunters Hill.
In 2000 he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia. Jack is on the Patron of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW and a Life Member of the Australian Conservation Foundation. Jack continues be active in local issues, particularly in various over-development proposals.
Young Citizen of the Year - Luke Darwall
Luke Darwall has demonstrated exceptional leadership and strong community citizenship. In 2007, Luke was a prefect at Ashfield Boys High School and a Youth Leader at St James Church, Croydon. In sports, he is an enthusiastic and competent team player and was selected in representative sport throughout his high school years. He has also been active in fundraising efforts and supporting the school’s extra curricular activities. Luke’s outstanding feature is that he is a regular contributor, reliable, responsible and has a strong sense of social justice.
Young Artist of the Year - Daniel Neurath
Outstanding pianist Daniel Neurath graduated from Ashfield Boys High School last year. Daniel was a prefect and a member of the school’s Concert Band, Stage Band and the ‘Daniel Neurath’ trio.
Daniel was successfully nominated for the HSC Music Encore Performance 2007, a selection of outstanding performances by HSC students at the Sydney Opera House. In October 2007, he also performed live on 2MBS FM on the “Stormy Monday” program. He is also an exceptional piano performer and the ‘best student ever taught’ spanning 20 years, according to his music teacher!

Victor Vieyra For outstanding service to the Ashfield Access Committee and Seniors Action Committee.
Barbara Black For outstanding service to the Croydon House Nursing Home
Shu Fen Wang For outstanding service to the West Region Chinese Association.
