“We are very pleased to have achieved this significant milestone for the Civic Centre Redevelopment, a project that has involved an extensive period of planning and consultation between Council, the architects, users of Council's facilities, residents and Council staff,” he said.
“We are confident that the redeveloped Civic Centre, which takes into account feedback from our customers, library patrons and users of the Centre, will be an affordable, accessible and community-focused facility,” he said.
“We are proud that the new portions of the Civic Centre could achieve an Australian Building Greenhouse Rating (ABGR) of 4, with environmentally sustainable aspects including modern, energy efficient mechanical and electrical equipment, stormwater harvesting, lighting design which maximises the use of natural light and includes energy efficient fixtures, as well as modern and efficient air conditioning and ventilation systems.”
Mr Gainger said the next steps would include the preparation of a building certificate and tendering for the services required to bring the project to completion.
“Council will commence procurement processes to appoint a project manager, probity auditors, a company to demolish the Westpac bank building and a construction company to undertake the redevelopment,” he said.
Mr Gainger said key benefits of the new Civic Centre would include an accessible Customer Service Centre, a landscaped forecourt fronting Liverpool Road , an expanded, state of the art library, new and accessible community meeting rooms, refurbished Council offices and a small retail tenancy.
“The Ashfield Council Civic Centre will remain one of the most vital pieces of community infrastructure,” he said.
“By investing in this major, critical infrastructure, Council will be providing a modern, contemporary facility for our community and Council's service delivery, and will ensure that we are able to continue to meet our community's expectations and be sustainable into the future.
“Meetings are also underway with local Youth Service providers to explore grant opportunities to fund a youth resource centre as another aspect of the redevelopment.”
