Summer Hill 40km/hr Pedestrian Initiative

Ashfield Council and the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) have introduced 40km/h speed limits on some roads in the Summer Hill Village that have a high number of pedestrians. These roads are clearly signposted. The RTA has funded this road safety initiative.

Why a lower speed limit?
In 2004 more pedestrians than drivers were killed in the Sydney Metropolitan area. Lower vehicle speeds result in fewer pedestrian injuries and deaths.

Where does the new speed limit apply?
The new 40km/h speed limit area is signposted in the Summer Hill Village on Smith Street, west of Moonbie Street to Nowranie Street, including Lackey Street and Hardie Avenue. The northern side of Summer Hill Station, Grosvenor Crescent at the approaches to Sloane Street, and Sloane Street, between Grosvenor Crescent to Gower Street, is also signposted as a 40km/h speed limit area.

Is the new speed limit enforceable?
The new speed limit is now applicable and normal enforcement procedures will apply.

Heavy and Speeding Traffic

If you have concerns about too much heavy or speeding traffic in your street then write to Council. Council will assess the extent of the problem and consider appropriate speed management schemes.

Traffic Signs

Requests for new traffic signs must be in writing and contain street name, suburb, nearest cross street, type of sign and information supporting the request.

For the replacement and maintenance of RTA signs including give way, keep left, loading zone, no entry and no parking signs or if signs are causing a traffic hazard please telephone the Roads and Traffic Authority Traffic Management Centre on 131 700.

To request addition or maintenance of a Council traffic or street name sign please telephone Works and Engineering Services on 9716 1987 with details on location, type of sign, extent of damage if any and if it is causing a hazard.

For further information please telephone Works and Engineering Services on 9716 1987.

Devices

Requests for the installation of a safety device/traffic calming device or reporting of a problem with an existing device including speed humps, traffic thresholds, roundabouts or traffic islands must be submitted in writing detailing location, (street/nearest cross street/suburb), information supporting a request for a new device or concern expressed with an existing device.

With requests for a marked pedestrian crossing Council must first establish the demand by counting pedestrian and vehicle numbers at the location.

This is basic criteria which must be met before the Roads and Traffic Authority will consider the request.

For further information please telephone Works and Engineering Services on 9716 1987.
