Every year, hundreds of thousands of Australians help clean up their local environment on Clean Up Australia Day. It's fun, easy and everyone can take part. Individuals and local groups can either organise a Clean Up site or volunteer to join an existing site.
Australians are the among the highest producers of waste, per person, in the world with an estimated 7 billion cigarette butts ending up in Australian waterways, streets and parklands each year.
Clean Up Australia Day is held on the first Sunday in March each year.

More than 65 volunteers collected in excess of 1.37 tonnes of rubbish as part of Clean Up Australia Day 2011 - equivalent to the weight of a small car!
Many students from schools in the Ashfield Council area volunteered their time to collect rubbish around school grounds on Friday 4 March. 2011 collection results from local schools are as follows:
29 volunteers from the Ashfield Seniors Action Committee; Chinese Australian Service Society; West Region Chinese Association participated in Clean Up Australia Day, collecting 300kg of rubbish from an area bounded by Palace Street; Holden Street; Arthur Street and Milton Street Ashfield. CASS member, Ms Dalovia Auyang supervised the collection teams from this site. Mr George Kang was unable to assist on the day due to poor health although he has generously assisted for many years.
24 volunteers from the Greenway Sustainability Project collected 435kg of rubbish from Cadigal Reserve in Summer Hill. Council's Greenway Project Officer, Joanne McDonnell supervised the collection teams for this area.
Twelve (12) members of the Ekushe Academy Australia also collected 265kg of rubbish from Richard Murden Reserve and adjacent to the City West Link in Haberfield.
Ashfield Council thanks all our local volunteers who made the day such a success.
