Artists@Ashfield

In response to the Council Cultural Plan 2007-2012, the Artists @ Ashfield group was established in June 2008 with the assistance of the Artist in Residence at the time, Sarah-Jane Cook from South Australia.

Local residents who are artists or arts practitioners or arts supporters or may be just plain arts enthusiasts meet regularly to support and promote the advancement of the arts in the Ashfield area.  New members are welcome.  Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7pm at Thirning Villa, Pratten Park 40 Arthur Street Ashfield.  The entrance to this precinct is directly opposite A'Beckett Avenue.

The objectives of the group include:

  • To support and promote artists and arts practitioners living and working in the Ashfield area.
  • To support and advocate for the advancement of the arts in the Ashfield area, including the development of local art projects and facilities.
  • To create networks and facilitate strategic partnerships between individual artists, arts bodies, arts supporters and the community in the Ashfield area and other regions.
  • To actively seek public and private funding, grants and sponsorships to support the Objectives of Artists@Ashfield.
  • To act in an advisory capacity to Ashfield Council in matters related to the Arts and culture, including the Artist in Residence program.
  • To ensure that artists and the arts continue to contribute to Ashfield being a chosen place to live, work and visit.
  • To highlight the intrinsic value of artists and the arts to individual and community life in Ashfield.

The group aims to:

  • Recruit new members
  • Organise community exhibitions
  • Identify local exhibition opportunities
  • Develop a program of artist talks and/or demonstrations

Council's current support includes the provision of meeting space, exhibition opportunities at Thirning Villa and at the annual Carnival of Cultures.  If you are interested in more information about the Artists @ Ashfield please contact Anthia Hart on 9716 1866.
