Respite services can give carers a break from their usual caring role. Respite is available on a short-term basis and in either planned or in the case of an emergency situation. Carers may be providing different levels of care for family members and friends who are ageing, have a disability, a chronic condition, or who suffer from a mental illness. Primary carers often provide over 40 hours of unpaid care every week. This unpaid work contributes enormously to the community care sector and to society as a whole. We recognise the essential place of carers in our community and work to achieve recognition and adequate support.
