Exercise & Well-being

Tai Chi in The Park
Ashfield Council has sponsored Tai Chi in the Park since October 2002.  Each Wednesday (except public and school holidays) people meet at 10am in the Ashfield Park to practise the gentle movements of Tai Chi. Participants are guided by an accredited teacher through the graceful movements of this ancient Chinese exercise.  The health benefits of practising Tai Chi are well documented and the practice is now seen as a valuable component of falls prevention programs.  Because the movements are gentle, people of all ages, abilities and levels of fitness can take part.  One of the special benefits of this program, is that participants have the opportunity to enjoy an activity outdoors surrounded by trees and open space.  There is no charge to attend. Participants should wear comfortable loose clothing, shoes suitable for exercise, a hat, sun-screen and bring a bottle of water.

It is essential that people register for this program.  This can be done by phoning SHARE Health on 9533 4422.

For more information about this program please contact Anthia on 9716 1866.

Fitter & Stronger

Active in Ashfield
There is always a lot to do in Ashfield, whether it’s playing tennis or soccer at the local park, social dancing in the Civic Centre, participating in theatre workshops, or swimming classes at the local pool.

Want to know what's available?
“Active in Ashfield” is a project by Ashfield Council aimed at encouraging local residents to get out and to get active! This doesn’t just mean doing physical exercise – although this is one great way to do it. Getting active can be social and recreation-based too; either through a club, with a group of friends or partner, or by yourself. You can sign up for free Tai Chi classes, join a sporting club, take a walk through Ashfield Park, enjoy a bus outing or become a member of the local theatre group. We have put together a directory of local sport, recreational and social clubs to help you get involved.

Council has published a directory called the “Active in Ashfield Directory: Sport, Recreation and Social Activities in Ashfield”. The directory has been published in English and Chinese.
