Ashfield Council’s Heritage Advisory Service

Ashfield Council provides a heritage advisory service to owners of heritage properties The objective is to help owners maintain the character and style of their properties and protect places that have heritage significance by providing design assistance. A modest fee applies to use the service - refer to Council’s Fees & Charges.

Our friendly heritage advisers are available to provide informal advice on various issues including:

  • Pre - lodgment development application advice on developments affecting heritage items and properties within heritage conservation areas (or properties adjacent to a heritage item or heritage conservation area);
  • Highlighting particular design issues that may need to be considered; and -
  • Advice on maintenance and restoration.

Information provided is not binding but can be considered as a starting point for more detailed design work to be carried out by an architect or designer. Photographs of a property and sketches showing design concepts will assist our advisers to provide quality feedback.

All owners of older buildings in the local area, not just owners of heritage listed properties, are invited to make use of the heritage advisory service. Architects and designers can benefit from early contact with our heritage advisers as relevant heritage issues can be identified at the beginning of the project.

This can help to avoid future delay in the development assessment and approval process.

Our heritage inventory provides details of most individual heritage items and all heritage conservation areas.

For more information, or to make an appointment with a heritage adviser, contact Council on 9716 1800.  As this service is in high demand, please organise an appointment as soon as you are aware of the need. Consultations usually take one hour (longer appointments can be arranged) and are held at Council’s offices and/or at the property as appropriate.
