National Year of Reading 2012 : launch Tuesday 14 February

For the National Year of Reading Ashfield Library aims to promote : a lifelong love of reading ; literacy ; our library collections and services. There will be many events and activities throughout the year, kicking off with a jam-packed launch day on Tuesday 14 February!

Starting at 9.45am, Mayor of Ashfield Lyall Kennedy will officially launch the National Year of Reading at Ashfield Library, including a morning tea and the Australian Wildlife animal show.

All day at Ashfield and Haberfield Libraries every hour, free raffle tickets will be handed out for your chance to win a National Year of Reading booklight.

All day at Ashfield and Haberfield Libraries staff will pass around a bag with authors and genres to read ‘outside the square’. Write a review in 140 characters or less and tweet it (#NYR12), and/or add to our reviews noticeboard.

Other events throughout the day include:

  • a session on how to read to babies;
  • craft for adults (Ashfield and Haberfield);
  • a staff performance of the picture book Have You Ever Ever Ever? by Colin McNaughton;
  • library tours;
  • sessions on how to download ebooks and learn about twitter and the twitter reading group;
  • storytime for adults : Christine Carlton from Australian Storytellers Guild will read stories on the February petal theme of ‘Laugh’;
  • a literacy class presented by Mission Australia;
  • local caricaturist Dani Vittz will draw teenagers as their favourite book characters;
  • a special evening book trivia event with performance poet Jessica Cook.
