The development of the Our Energy Future: Renewable Energy Master Plan brought together eight pioneering councils in southern Sydney and the Institute for Sustainable Futures to identify a range of practical and cost effective actions and delivery models for significantly increasing the uptake and deployment of renewable energy across the residential, business and government sectors in the participating local government areas. The eight participating councils are Ashfield, Bankstown, Canada Bay, Canterbury, Kogarah, Leichardt, Marrickville and Rockdale. The vision of the project team is to see up to 30% of the region’s energy needs being provided though renewable sources.
The Master Plan process included three Our Energy Future workshops that were held in July 2013. At these workshops 130 council staff, residents and businesses provided their input and feedback on how we can increase the amount of renewable energy produced in southern Sydney. The resulting Renewable Energy Master Plan will help to change attitudes and ways of doing business in the region and decrease the reliance on fossil fuels.
Ashfield Council will continue to work with participating councils on implementing the Master Plan’s renewable energy projects, such as solar bulk buying, solar leasing, bioenergy initiatives, and urban-rural partnerships.
