Public Works & Infrastructure

Ashfield Council's public works team is based at the Council's depot in Summer Hill.  This team of Council staff is responsible for coordinating and undertaking an extensive range of public works projects, including:

  • Road repairs and resurfacing - please see our Road Resurfacing Program for scheduled locations.
  • Footpath, kerb and gutter repairs and refurbishment
  • Traffic management and traffic calming
  • Drainage maintenance and repairs
  • Signage throughout the Local Government Area, including street signs, park signs and parking signage
  • Construction work throughout the municpality

You will see our public works staff out at work in the community - they are truly the face of Council for many of our residents.

Roadworks Consultation:

Council is proposing to carry out the following works and is seeking resident comments regarding the proposals below:

A submission may contain comments, which express either concern or support for all or any particular aspects of a proposal/policy/plan. Submissions must contain a name and address, and preferably, phone and fax numbers or e-mail address. It is important to note that any submissions received may be made publicly available, including via Council’s website as part of the Council business paper.

LOCATION: Martin Street, Haberfield (Dalhousie Street to City West Link Road)

WORKS PROPOSED: Road works & drainage improvements:

  1. Reconstruct kerb and gutter on both sides, reconstruct driveways & pram ramps on both sides as required, construct new dish drain at Empire Street and remove existing pipes under the pavement and the construction of new grass verge.

Residents wishing to peruse plans of these roadworks, may do so on Council’s website or at the Council’s Customer Service Centre foyer or either of Council’s libraries, for those residents wishing to discuss the proposals, are invited to contact Mrs Nalani Patabendi of Council’s Infrastructure Department on 9716 1800 weekdays between 9.00am-4.30pm.

Written comments on the proposed roadworks are invited and will be received up to Friday 16th December 2016 addressed to the Interim General Manager to PO Box 1145, ASHFIELD 2131 or Fax 9716 1911, or email info@ashfield.nsw.gov.au, or submit in person at the Ashfield Service Centre at 260 Liverpool Road, Ashfield.

LOCATION: Dover Street, Summer Hill (from Grosvenor Crescent to Parramatta Road)

WORKS PROPOSED: Road works & drainage improvements, and Intersection and traffic device upgrade:

  1. Reconstruction of driveways and footpath, reconstructing and raising the kerb to improve roadway cross falls and asphalt resheeting of the roadway. A new dish drain crossing will be constructed to improve drainage across Kensington Street at the intersection of Dover Street.
  2. Re-alignment of the roadway at the intersection of Dover Street and Grosvenor Crescent, and provide a wider pedestrian island refuge, to enhance road safety at the intersection.     
  3. The speed hump outside No 13 Dover Street will be upgraded to the same type and design of speed hump outside No 20 Dover Street.

Residents wishing to discuss the proposals, are invited to contact Mr Mohamed Rafeek of Inner West Council – Ashfield on 9716 1800 weekdays between 8.30am-3.30pm. Following closure of the consultation period, the intersection and traffic device upgrade component of the design work will be subject to Traffic Committee approval and Council adoption.

Listed below are the known roadworks which are scheduled to be undertaken by Ashfield Council in the coming months. These works may be delayed due to adverse weather. (The list does not include any emergency, unplanned or minor maintenance works, such as pothole repairs)

Haberfield Bay Run Upgrade (Iron Cove Creek Bridge to UTS Rowing Club, Haberfield). Works include:

  • Construct 4.5m wide asphalt path for cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Removal of trees to accommodate the widened path and address safety issues.
  • Planting of mature and more suitable tree species and shrubs on either side of the path.
  • Garden beds separating cycleway from walking.
  • Installation of new seating.

Parramatta Road, between Orpington Street and Ormond Street. Works include:

  • Shared path cycleway on Parramatta Road, between Orpington Street and Ormond St.
  • Shared path cycleway on Dalhousie Street, between Parramatta Road and driveway.
  • Cycleway/pedestrian refuge in Ormond St.
  • Accessible ramp within Ashfield Park at intersection of Parramatta Road and Dalhousie Street, next to the existing steps on the eastern side.

Shared Path Cycleway

Proposed works from Feb 2016 to June 2016.

Night works may be required. All residents will be notified prior to works commencing.

Waratah Street and Tillock Street, Haberfield. Works include:

  • Road narrowing speed humps, centre blister islands, and slow point traffic devices.

Traffic Devices

Proposed works from April 2016 to June 2016.

Residents will be notified prior to works commencing.

Summer Hill Train Station - Grosvenor Crescent. Works include:

  • Relocation of pedestrian crossing at Summer Hill Train Station.
  • Street lighting upgrade.
  • Additional footpath and roadway works.

Pedestrian Crossing

Proposed works from April 2016 to June 2016. Traffic diversions may be required.

Residents will be notified prior to works commencing.

Sloane Street, Summer Hill. Works include:

  • Reconstruct driveways, reconstruct kerb and gutter on both sides, reconstruct footpath on both sides as required, reconstruct road pavement and the construction of new drainage lines.
