WestConnex

The State Government has signed contracts for the construction of Stage 1 and 2 of the WestConnex motorway, which is expected to take eight years to complete. Planning approval has been granted for the WestConnex M4 East Parramatta to Haberfield (Stage 1) and WestConnex M5 Beverley Hills to St Peters (Stage 2) components of the project. Preliminary works commenced on Stage 1 of the project in March 2016.

The M4 to M5 link (Stage 3) is currently being investigated. An Environmental Impact Statement has not yet been released.

Residents, community groups and the Inner West Council have identified and raised localised concerns regarding this project, including the following impacts:

  • the compulsory aquisition of homes
  • the loss of heritage buildings
  • the location and design of emission stacks and related concern for the health and safety of children and residents
  • increased traffic congestion due to extra lanes exiting at Parramatta Road, Haberfield, and an extra lane entering at the City West Link
  • increased car usage if dedicated bus lanes are not created on Parramatta Road
  • increased traffic and 'rat-running' on local roads in Haberfield and Ashfield
  • increased downstream flooding
  • whether Stage 3 of the project will be in fact realised due to its dependence on financing from tolls

The Inner West Council remains committed to liaising with the community, Sydney Motorway Corporation and the State Government to help ensure that localised impacts are identified and minimised.
