Free Art workshops for Children

Cher Breeze, our newest Artist in Residence will be holding a range of workshops with a focus on using recycled materials during her residency at Ashfield. There will be sessions designed for toddlers. Another lot of workshops will suit the 10yrs to 15yrs age group. There is also a project that will be undertaken for the Ashfield Library. Children from three local preschools will be invited to assist with the creation of three canvasses to be displayed on the Kids Wall in the library.

An exhibition will be held at the end of Ms Breeze's residency, with an opening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Friday 3 October 2008. There will be an opportunity for people to view the work over the weekend 4-5 October between 10am and 2pm.

Free workshops and exhibition will be held at Thirning Villa, 40 Arthur Street, Ashfield.

Parenting Seminars

Ashfield Council has released a new calendar of parenting seminars spanning July to December 2008. The calendar covers several different topics suitable for parents and carers with newborn children through to teenagers. New topics covered include:

  • Helping your teenager manage stress
  • “PlayPower” - using play in every day moments
  • Managing the impact of new technology such as the internet
  • How to parent your child when you're a non-resident parent

Parenting sessions will be held at either Ashfield Public School or Ashfield Boys' High School. All parenting seminars are free to attend. To make a booking contact Council on 9716 1844 or download a copy of the program.


Environmental Workshops

Ashfield and Leichhardt Councils have joined forces to present a new series of free environmental workshops called "Treading Lightly".

This year-long program of workshops will provide Ashfield and Leichhardt Council residents with information and solutions for sustainable living. Choose from topics including energy savings, rainwater tanks, composting and worm farming, no-dig gardening, reducing chemicals in the home, eco-renovation and green purchasing.

FAMILY and FRIENDS in the Italian Community

Are you concerned about someone who you know who is ageing? For people in the Italian community Ashfield Council are holding a FREE information seminar for Family and Friends .

Topics include:

•  Changes to expect with ageing

•  Memory changes – could it be dementia?

•  Support available to keep people active and involved in the community

•  Where to turn for help

DATE: Wednesday 20 th August 2008

TIME: 6:00pm – 8:00pm (light supper provided)

LOCATION: Michael Maher Room Haberfield Library, 78 – 80 Dalhousie St, Haberfield

(NB: Presentations will be in English however Italian speaking workers will be present to provide support).

Ashfield Arts Association

Our previous Artist in Residence Sarah-Jane Cook assisted Ashfield Council to establish an Ashfield Arts Association. On Friday 13 June, artists and supporters of the arts living or working in the Ashfield area met to investigate the formation of an association that would provide support for the advancement of the arts in the Ashfield area. There will be fortnightly meetings on Friday evenings at 6.30pm at Thirning Villa, throughout the establishment stage of the association. Interested persons are welcome.

Red Bug: Stories, Activities & Play in the Park
